Tuttle, Daniel W., Jr. (1983). Quo Vadis? Hawaii's Capacity to Govern, Educational Perspectives. Assesses a democratic society's ability to govern by focusing on three areas: (1) individual philosophical and/or religious beliefs and how they interweave with governance; (2) the making of basic public policy in constituent assemblies; and (3) the conversion of understandings into laws that reflect thoughtful programs and changing times. Siguan, Miquel (1984). Language and Education in Catalonia, Prospects: Quarterly Review of Education. The political changes which have occurred in Spain, e.g., the introduction of a democratic system of government, have made it possible for Catalonia to re-establish the official use of its language–Catalan–and to use this language in education. American Educator: The Professional Journal of the American Federation of Teachers (1983). The Propaganda War. Teachers must not provide a platform for any student or outside speaker to ventilate racist, anti-Semitic, or totalitarian sentiments. In the classroom, democratic values should be obvious from the outset. Toward this end, a curriculum entitled "Extremist Groups" has been developed by the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith. Ranade, Wendy; Norris, Pippa (1984). Democratic Consensus and the Young: A Cross-National Comparison of Britain and America, Youth and Society. One hundred ninety-nine American and 204 British university students were surveyed. They shared similar, strongly positive attitudes towards democratic "rules of the game," such as free speech, the role of law, and equality. But Americans showed a greater trust of government and a stronger sense of being able to affect the political process.
